Bayard-Condict Building
SawickiTarella has established itself as the firm of choice in landmark restoration, as demonstrated by the recent completion of the Louis Sullivan-designed Bayard-Condict Building on Bleecker Street in Manhattan. Sanctioned by City, State and Federal Landmarks Agencies, the four-year project involved restoring the ground-floor façade that was destroyed in 1964 by re-creating the massive terra cotta "cabbage head" column capitals and cantilevered storefront. An expanded lobby space was created that featured traditional details such as mosaic floor and glass wall and exposed concealed Sullivan details such as the stairway and former vestibule cast-iron relief panels. This careful rehabilitation will add years of life to a modernized treasure.
